System Audit for Small Hospitals: Pharmacy

INTRODUCTION

We are looking at how small hospitals especially in mission hospitals can improve the various systems according to the guidelines given by the NABH [National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and health care providers]. Pharmacy is one of the most important revenue generating areas of the hospital and a well-run pharmacy could generate a lot of income for the hospital. We look at the various guidelines given by NABH with respect to management of medication.

THE POLICIES

Health is a state subject and each state has its own mandatory laws that need compliance. Some of them are as follows:

• Registration under Pharmacy Act
• Registration under Drugs and Cosmetics Act
• Registration under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act
• Drugs and Magical Remedies Act [Objectionable Advertisement Act]

Registered pharmacist is required for managing the pharmacy and the registration should be clearly displayed in the pharmacy. The registration number should be available in all the pharmacy related documents.
