Introduction to Surgery for BPH

The patients here have significant urinary symptoms despite medical treatment, in other words, in terms of treatment, there is surgery. Prostate surgery can be performed under a spinal anaesthetic as an alternative to the more usual general anaesthetic, but this is usually for patients with compromised lung function, in other words, men who have bronchiectasis, emphysema, and so on.

Mr. Christopher Eden, Consultant Urologist: Prostate surgery is extremely effective in terms of improving patient's urination, their symptom scores, but it is an operation which is not used as a first-line treatment mainly because in this day and age, medical treatment is effective in 2/3 of patients in improving symptoms.
