Newborn Baby Care: How to spot your baby has reflux

If your newborn baby is refusing feeds, crying during and straight after milk feeds, or seems in pain, then he or she may have reflux. This is when acid from the stomach flows back into the food pipe, causing painful heartburn. Reflux is often accompanied by vomiting, although silent reflux can cause the same symptoms without vomiting. Keeping your baby upright during and after feeding can help to alleviate reflux.

It is common to mistake the symptoms of reflux with colic, and while both often improve as your baby develops, reflux can be treated with an infant antiacid prescribed by your doctor.
