What recent developments have there been in prostate cancer treatment?

Experimental treatments of prostate cancer include either freezing the prostate, cryotherapy; heating it, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU; or using some form of light to damage the prostate after the cells have been sensitized by using a photosensitizer, in other words, Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT. All 3 of these are very much regarded as being experimental.

Mr. Christopher Eden, Consultant Urologist: They have been used in patients with localized prostate cancer, and it's certainly important that some centers continue to do that to generate data so that we know exactly how effective they are. But the efficacy of each of these 3, at the moment, is thought to be significantly less than either surgery or radiotherapy.
