Open prostatectomy

Mr Christoper Eden - Consultant Urologist: Open prostatectomy really was first described the beginning of the 20th century--I think 1901, 1902, that sort of time--and it represented the only way that surgeons had in that era of removing the inner part of the prostate for obstruction. It's a very bloody operation--the prostate has an extremely good blood supply, the prostate is relatively inaccessible--and it has been completely superseded in this day and age by TURP, trans urethral resection of the prostate, other than for patients with very large prostates--in other words, prostates usually in excess of 100, more usually 150, grams. But these are very unusual.
