Chemotherapy for Prostate Cancer

Mr. Christopher Eden, Consultant Urologist: Cytotoxic chemotherapy, in other words, the sort of drug that makes you feel ill and your hair fall out, is now being used with patients with prostate cancer, but for a very tightly defined subset. In other words, patients who have had hormonal manipulation but in whom the hormonal manipulation is no longer effective. There is evidence to show that cytotoxic chemotherapy is a benefit. At the moment, the benefit is relatively small. It does add some months to your life expectancy, and hopefully, it does improve the quality of your life. But is important to realize that this is a fairly toxic treatment and is only restricted for patients who are likely to benefit in terms of survival.
