Twins and Multiples: Guidance on weaning

Dr. Carol Cooper, General Practitioner: As with a singleton baby, your babies should be ready to try solid food towards the age of 6 months. Smaller babies can usually be weaned a bit later than larger babies who may be ready for solids before 6 months, so it follows that your twins may not be ready to wean at the same time. Whatever you do, don't start solids before 4 months at the earliest because the baby's gut just isn't mature enough yet. Don't start feeding your babies solid food until they are at least 4 months old.

If you're not sure, get advice from your health visitor or your doctor, and when you start weaning, those first foods are really just to give your babies the experience of different tastes and textures, and bear in mind, a lot of it will end up outside the baby. 2 babies means twice the mess, and 3 babies, 3 times the mess, so feed them somewhere that's easy to clean afterwards, and make sure that you're wearing something easy to wash as well.
