Is treatment always necessary if you have prostate cancer?

It isn't always necessary to treat for prostate cancer

Mr Christopher Eden - Consultant Urologist: in patients who have a low grade of prostate cancer, particularly if they're old today--in other words, over the age of 65. There is an option of doing nothing, what we call active surveillance. The rationale behind that is that it may well be possible that patients will outlive their prostate cancer with no significant side effects. But it is important that those patients are monitored for signs of tumor progression--in other words, monitored with PSA, monitored also with repeat prostate biopsy to make sure the grade of the tumor doesn't change.
