Open prostatectomy

Mr Christoper Eden – Consultant Urologist: Open prostatectomy really was first described the beginning of the 20th century–I think 1901, 1902, that sort of time–and it represented the only way that surgeons had in that era of removing the inner part of the prostate for obstruction. It’s a very bloody operation–the prostate has an extremely good blood supply, the prostate is relatively inaccessible–and it has been completely superseded in this day and age by TURP, trans urethral resection of the prostate, other than for patients with very large prostates–in other words, prostates usually in excess of 100, more usually 150, grams. But these are very unusual.
