Dr. J. Gnanaraj is an Urologist and laparoscopic and rural surgeon trained at CMC Vellore. He is currently the Director of Medical Services of SEESHA, a charitable trust, and an Adjunct Professor at the Karunya University EIE department. The Lancet Commission on Global Health has chosen Karunya as the center of excellence in innovation.
Dr. Gnanaraj started his career as a missionary doctor with Friends Missionary Prayer Band in a remote tribal area in Dangs district of Gujarat, and later spent over two decades with Emmanuel Hospital Association that has many hospitals in rural areas. His interest is to take modern surgery to the poor and marginalized in rural areas, which has inspired him to help 23 hospitals start minimally invasive surgeries, and train many rural doctors.
Dr. Gnanaraj has published approximately 200 articles in national and international Journals related to modification of surgical techniques and managing rural hospitals. He developed high tech diagnostic and surgical camps that have benefited thousands of rural patients with over 50,000 of them receiving modern surgical care in the remote areas over the past three decades. He also started the Surgical Services Initiative to serve the poor and the marginalized in rural areas.
Dr. Gnanaraj is the recipient of numerous awards including:

- The Somervelle Prize in Surgery from CMC Vellore
- The Barker Memorial Award from Tropical Doctor

He is a Fellow of the Association of Rural Surgeons of India, International College of Surgeons, and Indian Association of the Gastroenterological Surgeons. Dr. Gnanaraj is also the Indian Director of the International Federation of Rural Surgeons. He served as the Editor of the publication Rural Surgery for several years.
Throughout his quest to serve the poor patients in the rural areas, Dr. Gnanaraj has been involved in developing low cost equipment such as the vacuum therapy unit, low cost noninvasive monitoring devices, and single incision gasless laparoscopic surgery devices. He has also designed hospital management software. He is working on accreditation and credentialing for rural surgical facilities and is involved with NABH as an assessor. Currently he is working with the Association of Rural Surgeons of India as the Vice President and is the joint Secretary for the International Federation of Rural Surgeons.
Dr. Alexander is an interventional cardiologist who is the Head of the Division of Cardiology at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital in Coimbatore, India. He has established a very active interventional unit at the hospital, which performs 1,500 procedures per year, including 500 cardiac and 150 peripheral interventions. The division also offers ablation procedures through its electrophysiology program; and pacemaker, ICD, and heart failure device implantations. Dr. Alexander is the course director of the STEMI India meeting, an international STEMI conference and the only one of its type in India. He is also the founder trustee of STEMI-INDIA, a not-for-profit organization that disseminates information on STEMI management, trains STEMI teams, and develops national STEMI guidelines and develops a STEMI system of care in India. Dr. Alexander is a member of the National Guideline Committee, established by the Union Health Ministry, and he has served in leadership positions for several cardiology societies in India. He has presented papers and given lectures at numerous regional, national, and international meetings and has been invited faculty at major cardiology and interventional cardiology conferences. Dr. Alexander is active as a principal investigator in numerous cardiology-focused clinical trials.
Gulrez Shah Azhar, MD, MPH, MBBS

Dr. Azhar’s clinical and professional focus areas include public health, including infectious diseases and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), epidemiology, and health systems and policy. The focus of his MD was community medicine. He is Senior Lecturer at the Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar Sardar Patel Institute Campus, and a Wellcome Trust-funded researcher (infectious disease). He also serves as an investigator for research projects for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the government of Gujarat. Formerly with the Non-communicable Diseases and Mental Health Cluster at the World Health Organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Azhar worked on an ongoing systematic review of self-management of NCDs and on developing a prioritized research agenda for NCD research in low- and middle-income countries. His research also has examined the pattern of utilization of healthcare services during illness, and he has conducted a systematic review of DOTS-based treatment of tuberculosis in India. Dr. Azhar is a winner of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship of the European Commission. His publications have appeared in national and international journals, and he has presented at various conferences and conducted short courses and trainings for other healthcare professionals.
Neelesh Bhandari, MD

She heads the prestigious Dastur Clinic at White Hall, Kemps Corner, Mumbai. Dhiraj Gada, MD, DGO, DFP, FICMCH
Dr. Gada specializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility and has been an IVF practitioner since 1985, with a special interest in low-cost IVF. He was one of the pioneers in endoscopy in Central India and was first to bring ultrasonography to his state. He also is credited with the delivery of the IVF Baby in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Gada has presented more that 50 papers/ lectures/orations at national and international conferences. He is president of the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR); and a member of the Board of Directors, the Scientific Committee, and the Standards & Practice Committee of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS). He is chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of IFFS 2016, India.
Sharad Gogate, MD
Dr. Gogate is a gynaecologist, obstetrician, and perinatologist working in the field of prenatal diagnosis and therapy for over 25 years. He is Director of Foetal Medicine Consultancy Services at Surlata Hospital in Mumbai and has conducted more than 9,000 deliveries, with almost one-third of them high-risk, complicated cases. He is also Senior Consultant, Foetal Medicine & Clinical Genetics at Hinduja National Hospital & Hinduja Healthcare Surgical Hospital in Mumbai. Dr. Gogate has served on the International Board of Advisors of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and is on the board of Editors of the international journal Prenatal Diagnosis. He has received numerous national awards for outstanding achievements in obstetrics, foetal medicine, and perinatology. He is President of the Indian Society for Prenatal Diagnosis & Therapy and has served in leadership roles for the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction. Dr. Gogate is an active member of the International Foetoscopy Group. He has contributed chapters to and edited several books and has published more than 50 scientific papers in national and international journals and given more than 100 scientific presentations and orations at various international and national scientific meetings.

Dr. Kulkarni’s professional focus is on infectious disease and microbiology. Dr. Acuña is an obstetrician-gynecologist, clinical geneticist, and clinical epidemiologist. He is associate professor of Human and Molecular Genetics and Clinical Epidemiology, Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine; director of the Division of Research and Information, FIU HWCOM; and guest researcher, United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Reproductive Health. She is Vice President of the Chinese Society of Reproductive Medicine, and President of Chinese Gynecological Endocrinology of the OB/GYN Society. She is an External Expert of the International Olympics Committee (IOC) Medical Commission.
Lord Naren Patel, MD
Dr. Patel sits in the House of Lords of the UK Parliament, having received a knighthood and elevation to the Peerage in 1999, and has served on the Science and Technology Committee. He is Chairman of the UK Stem Cell Oversight Committee, UK Stem Cell Network, and Chairman of the National Patient Safety Agency of England and Wales.
